Spro was founded in 1994 when Gamakatsu decided it was time to tend to Europe more intensively. Gamakatsu products (mainly fishing hooks) were sold by dealers throughout Europe up to that point. Because Europe represented a huge market potential for the company, Gamakatsu decided to set up its own distribution centre, Spro NV, in the Netherlands.
Since 1994, Spro NV has been the official distributor of Gamakatsu products (mainly hooks and fishing line) as well as a small range of rods, reels and accessories under the Spro brand name. Direct sales in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg were just the beginning. Spro NV quickly became the starting point for all European distributors. This made the flow of information much shorter and provided even better knowledge of the various local European markets. Vianen was strategically chosen at the intersection of two major Dutch highways (A2 and A27), near Rotterdam, one of the largest ports in Europe, and just a stone’s throw from Amsterdam, which has Europe’s largest airports. And it doesn’t end here ...
In 1997, Spro Corp. opened its doors in Kennesaw, Georgia to distribute Gamakatsu hooks in the eastern part of America and Spro products throughout the United States of America. In 1999, Spro Deutschland GmbH opened its doors to serve the German fishing tackle market, one of the largest in Europe, better and more effectively. The company started in Wiesbaden and moved to historic Weimar after a few years. Due to the better infrastructure and the need for future expansion, another move took place in early 2015 to Dusseldorf. In 2010, Spro started selling directly to the Czech market in the Czech Republic.
Spro began selling Gamakatsu hooks and line and a select range of reels, rods, lines, nets and accessories under the Spro brand. It is amazing to see how a small range that started in 1994 has evolved into a range of over 15,000 products. The Spro products are basically the same for all European countries. Of course, we manufacture some products especially for specific countries, but in principle we have a single catalogue for Europe.
Spro Corp. in the US has its own product range, which has been fully adapted to local US requirements. Some of these products are also sold in Europe. Take, for example, artificial lures such as the “Crank Bait” or the “Aruku-Shad” and “Little John”; Swimbaits, such as the BBZ developed by Bill Siemantel, or innovative surface baits like the “Dawg” and the BronzeEye frogs developed by Dean Rojas, just to name a few. The hooks are a cornerstone of the Gamakatsu company and are famous worldwide. The technology and materials are what make our hooks so superior to other brands. First and foremost is the high-quality carbon steel used to make Gamakatsu hooks. Hooks made of cheap, inferior material are weak, have a poor point and are not very sharp. In close cooperation with material manufacturers, Gamakatsu actually developed this unique material specifically for the production of fishing hooks; it’s a material now known as “high carbon steel”. Not only does this material have a higher percentage of carbon, it also contains no impurities. This ensures that no contamination in the metal will weaken the hooks.
Second, Gamakatsu has the most advanced hardening process in the world. This makes it possible to heat hooks and harden them into a stable state. Each hook is heated to a specific temperature that perfectly suits its size and shape and then cooled in oil. This process creates hooks that are super strong but not brittle. It is extremely difficult to achieve a perfect balance between strength and flexibility and it took many years for Gamakatsu to perfect this process. That’s why we make better hooks. Gamakatsu hooks are famous for their sharpness! Our sharpening process is one of, or probably the most advanced in the world, resulting in a perfect, fully tapered hook point with unsurpassed sharpness. Gamakatsu produces large quantities of extremely sharp hooks with consistent quality. The life of a fishing hook is measured by the sharpness, hardness and flexibility of the point of the hook. As a result, Gamakatsu has gained the trust of anglers all over the world and a considerable market share. Spro offers a wide range of reels, rods, line, nets, clothing, bags and accessories. One of Spro’s best products in Europe is the RedArc reel series. Although this front drag reel was introduced back in 2004, it is the most-beloved Spro reel to date! The RedArc has a great drag system; it works great under great pressure, and the gears are silky smooth.
In addition to GAMAKATSU® and SPRO®, we also own the Strategy® carp brand and the Strategy® Baits bait brand. Strategy baits include a boilie series, pop-ups and dips in different scents. We work hard to create more great products and introduce them to the market with our team of international Strategy test anglers. Spro also exclusively sells the brand “Watersnake”, Australian electric motors from Jarvis Marine. Our goal is to build a strong and solid company with big brands. We will continue to develop products that meet the needs of retailers and the needs of anglers around the world. Our main goal is to increase anglers’ trust in our brands and products. Another goal is to promote fishing among young people. We can never have enough young anglers. They are definitely the future of the fishing tackle industry.
